Counter Right — When Power Gets Slanted

When to call it: After you've established Power Right, when the defense is slanting aggressively into your gaps, 2nd-and-6+, attacking backside pursuit, trap-heavy defensive schemes.

The blocking scheme (the counter magic):

  • C reaches the nose. Simple reach block — keep him in the A-gap.
  • RG & RT down-block to seal the strong side. Drive your man down the line.
  • LG pulls hard and leads through the playside B-gap. This is the play. The pull SELLS the Power Right look while opening a cutback lane behind it.
  • LT cuts off backside pursuit. Step down, find the backside DE or linebacker, and bury him. Cutback lanes die if backside pursuit isn't sealed.
  • F reads LG's pull and leads the next linebacker with an angle block. Follow the puller, attack with leverage.

B's execution (THE CRITICAL SELL):

  1. Mesh right and sell the Power fake. Jab step LEFT first. Defenders are reading B — if you don't sell it going left, they won't flow wrong.
  2. Receive the handoff with your shoulders square right, then cut back. The Mike linebacker is now chasing Q or reading his flow. The cutback gap is wide open.
  3. Follow LG's pull to the edge if the hole closes. Trust your lead blocker. Patience for a half-second, then attack upfield with vision.

Why it's devastating: Gap-control defenses pre-commit gaps. They've already declared "this linebacker is in the A, this one's in the B." Counter attacks BEHIND the committed gaps. When they slant and flow, you're running directly away from where they looked. It's Offensive Line 101.

The counter principle: For every action (Power Right), there's a reaction (Mike flows). Counter is the equal and opposite reaction to that defensive flow. Once you have Power working, defenses die to counters.

Coaching point: Film study is CRITICAL. Are they slanting? Are they flowing? If not, Power works all day and you don't need Counter. But once the Mike starts cheating, Counter becomes your bread-and-butter.
