Youth football down-and-distance recommendations

Down and distance is universal. The legal answers are not. Choose your game format so the plays, diagrams, and coaching decisions match the football your team actually plays.

Choose the ruleset before the play

Flag and tackle teams can use the same situational thinking, but they should not share a single call sheet. No-run zones and blocking rules change which answers are legal; field position and punt rules change which answers are smart.

5v5 Flag Football

Use a four-play youth flag package that changes with the line to gain, defensive leverage, and whether a run is legal.

  • Dive and Sweep where handoffs are legal
  • Slant-Flat and Stick in common no-run situations
  • Short, defined reads for a developing quarterback

Youth Tackle Football

Use a four-play youth tackle package that stays ahead of the chains and gives the offense a realistic answer on long yardage.

  • Dive and Sweep to attack inside and outside leverage
  • Power as a rehearsed short-yardage answer
  • Slant-Flat or a punt decision on long yardage

Shared coaching principles

What both guides have in common

Carry a small package your players can execute in both directions. The call sheet changes the priority of those plays; it does not ask the team to learn a new offense for every down.

Coach to the actual line to gain. On long yardage, an attainable completion and yards after the catch are usually better bets than turning a practiced quick concept into an improvised deep throw.

Script down-and-distance periods in practice. Players should hear the situation, understand the reason for the call, and know where the ball must finish before the snap.

Confirm local league rules. Player count, no-run zones, rush timing, blocking restrictions, and punt options can all change the correct decision.
