Two receivers release from the SAME side: the outside receiver runs a shallow Drag UNDER (2-4 yds) and the inside receiver runs a Dig/Basic OVER (10-14 yds). Their release relationship creates natural traffic, then the two routes high-low the linebacker. This same-side origin is what distinguishes Drive from Shallow Cross, whose under and over routes originate on opposite sides. Beats man with the rub and zone when the dig settles behind the LBs; usually paired with a backside clear.

Drive Right (6v6): outside runs the shallow @ 3yd underneath inside 's dig @ 12yd — a same-side release that creates the Drive rub and high-low. clears backside; checks down; sits @ 4yd.

When to call it

Excellent answer to Cover 1 — the drag eats horizontal space, the dig above stretches the LB level. Reliable 2nd-and-medium call when you need a chunk play but not a shot.

When not to use

Avoid Drive when the middle is crowded by low-hole robbers or when the protection cannot hold for the dig to enter the window. Spot-drop defenders who pass the drag cleanly and sit beneath the dig remove both primary levels unless the formation creates a real horizontal stretch.

How to adjust for situations

Vs man, tighten splits so the drag creates legal traffic; vs zone, let the dig settle between linebackers instead of running through the window. Against pressure, alert the drag immediately. On longer downs, deepen the dig without changing the drag so the two levels stay visibly separated.

Common mistakes

Drag depth wrong — should be at 2-4 yards, not 5+ (that becomes a shallow cross, different concept).
Dig too shallow; should be at 12 yards minimum to stretch the second-level defenders.
Releasing the Drag and Dig from opposite sides — that is Shallow Cross geometry, not the same-side Drive relationship.
Putting the Dig outside the shallow runner. The inside receiver runs the Dig; the outside receiver drives underneath on the Drag.
