Pistol Full House

A modern tackle-only full-house look, commonly built from 12 personnel: the QB aligns in pistol at about 4 yards; two H-backs or sniffers align behind the tackles and ahead of the QB; the tailback stacks directly behind the QB at about 8 yards; and one receiver splits to each side. Naming is not universal — coaches also call the family Diamond Pistol, Full Diamond, or Inverted Wishbone. This catalog uses Pistol Full House because it identifies both the quarterback depth and the three-back shell. Use it when the offense has two versatile H-backs, wants a downhill run threat without declaring direction, needs extra insert blockers or immediate interior protection, or wants to keep the same personnel on the field while shifting among heavy backfields. It is especially useful in short yardage and the low red zone, but its look-alike actions also support normal-down sequencing. Core complements are inside zone with insert, split-flow or bluff action; power and counter; QB read with an arc lead; and play-action that sends an H-back to the flat, wheel, seam, or late leak. The deep back's square downhill path helps sell the run, while either H-back can change the point of attack, cross the formation, protect, or release. Avoid leaning on the set when the offense lacks H-backs who can both block and threaten a defense as receivers, when the pistol exchange and footwork are not dependable, or when it has no perimeter or play-action answer for a defense that condenses and adds bodies to the box. Moving the tailback beside the QB produces the related Gun Full House variation. Removing the tailback and adding an attached tight end produces the Double Sniffer Empty / Gator variation, which is a different starting alignment rather than this canonical formation.
