The design

How Slants works

The outside and slot receivers release vertically for three yards, plant off the outside foot, and cross the defender's face on the canonical shallow Slant angle.
The back widens underneath and an eligible center settles as a short outlet, keeping the mirrored slants from collapsing into the same throwing lane.
The quarterback preselects the best leverage side, confirms the window after the snap, and gets the ball out on rhythm.

Troubleshooting

Avoid it when inside-leverage defenders are sitting in every throwing lane or a robber is waiting in the middle; use an outside-breaking or vertical stretch instead.
Receivers drift upfield instead of making the sharp three-yard break, turning a rhythm throw into a contested intermediate route.
The quarterback waits for every route to clear. Pick the best leverage side before the snap and throw the first clean window on time.
Inside receivers crowd one another. Keep the original split and leave the back and eligible center on their underneath outlets so adjacent slants do not finish in the same lane.
