Library starting settings

Handoffs: allowed. Blocking: off. Center receiving: eligible. Forward catches behind the line: allowed. Direct QB runs: off.

These are XO starting settings, not a governing body’s certification. Your saved playbook rules may differ. The example below does not apply a league preset or change a diagram; configure your league’s actual rules before using it.

Rules reference: 6v6 flag · USA Flag 6v6 Contact rules example

  • Six players does not define one ruleset. In this named 6v6 Contact format, every play requires a forward pass; the quarterback cannot run across the line, and handoffs and laterals are prohibited.
  • Keep this starter package pass-only: no Sweep, quarterback keeper, handoff-based RPO, or reverse. A completion behind the line can be advanced in this ruleset; do not import that permission into a league that requires a catch beyond the line.
  • The linked Contact format differs from XO’s non-contact 6v6 starting settings, which allow handoffs. For this pass-only ruleset, turn off handoffs and multi-handoff plays in your playbook. Confirm contact, receiver eligibility, rushing and timing separately; selecting six players does not apply this rulebook.

Which plays should I start with?

Six players means six total on offense, including the quarterback and center. Begin with three passing concepts and give each eligible receiver a separate lane. The extra player compared with 5v5 does not automatically mean another eligible receiver in every league.

A practical installation order

  1. Start with Curl-Flat: rehearse the outside curl and underneath flat against one coverage defender, with the remaining players in league-legal assignments.
  2. Add Stick for a stationary inside target. Keep the same underneath read and teach receivers to maintain separate lanes.
  3. Add Smash only when the quarterback can reach the corner route on time. If the pass is covered in practice, reset the rep and work on timing; do not install a run fallback.

7-on-7 passing / touch

XO has a 7v7 Touch editor format, but no dedicated passing-tournament library collection. The 7v7 Flag collection is not a tournament-ready substitute.

For example, USA Football’s 7on7 passing rules prohibit running plays and use a four-second release clock. Plan a passing progression within your event’s clock, and confirm center eligibility and permitted contact before adapting a concept.

8v8 and other formats

There is currently no dedicated 8v8 editor preset or library collection. The editor offers 4v4 Flag, but the library has no dedicated 4v4 collection either. Eight-player tackle and 8v8 flag are separate games; removing players from an 11-player diagram does not establish a legal formation.

Check your association’s field dimensions, line/back alignment, eligible receivers and blocking rules. Nebraska’s eight-player tackle differences illustrate the changes, but are not an 8v8 flag rulebook or a universal state standard.
